Get Picky Eaters to Eat Healthy Foods

Does your child refuse to eat vegetables? Have you tried almost every method of cooking in search of a way to make vegetables seem tastier for your child? Moreover, are you worried about the nutrition your child may be lacking because of his or her dislike of vegetables? If any of these statements applies to your current situation, now is the time to take action.

Vegetables are an important part of keeping a healthy diet in everyone. Without proper servings of vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals, children are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and other debilitating sicknesses in the future. Furthermore, children who do not learn how to eat vegetables at a young age are less likely to eat them in their later years. This is especially apparent in children who are used to eating foods that have too much salt, artificial sweeteners, and processed ingredients. These foods have slight addictive properties that become habitual foods for hungry, energetic children. You may think that taking a multi-vitamin is enough for a child to be healthy, but studies show that eating fresh, real food is more sufficient in giving children the nutrition they need in order to be healthy, happy kids. But the question arises again, how do I get my stubborn child to eat healthy foods that do not taste good to them?

Thank goodness we have a man like Jamie Oliver to help parents with such a predicament. Jamie Oliver has been revolutionizing the way children (and adults) eat in the United Kingdom for years. He is also taking this same step in the United States school system with the television show Food Revolution. He and his website offer many different, innovative solutions to helping us feed our children with foods of proper nutrition. Here are a few of the basics that anyone can try on their children:

  • No matter how you cook them, fresh vegetables are usually the best choice for healthy eaters. There are occasions where frozen vegetables are a better alternative, especially if it’s not a vegetable’s peak season. But for the most part, fresh is healthiest.
  • Children who enjoy meat are sure to enjoy veggie burgers. Today, many brands out there taste just like a meat burger and are loaded with nutritional value. Just be sure to keep the vegetables a secret from your children for a while. If they’ve eaten the veggie burgers several times before knowing about the veggies, they’re more likely to continue eating them even after having this knowledge. Which brings me to my next point…
  • If a child does not know that you are sneaking vegetables in the food they are eating, they will probably still enjoy it just as much. Take a food that your child likes, macaroni and cheese, for example. Add carrots, potatoes, even greens if you like. Blend them together with the cheese sauce and your child will never know the difference.
  • Find a way to make vegetables interesting. If your child likes animals, show them how herbivores survive on a strict diet of fruits and vegetables. If your child likes celebrities, show them how they’re into healthy eating as well. Applying your child’s interest will help them appreciate vegetables more.
  • Most importantly, don’t stress too much on your child’s situation. It’s completely normal for children to be picky with foods while growing up. What’s important is that we gradually teach them how to enjoy all different kinds of foods. If your child refuses to eat some vegetables now, don’t fret. Give them time and they will try them again when they are ready. If all else fails, sneak it into the food.

Many of us grew up disliking vegetables. I, for one, refused to eat vegetables until my late teens. Now, however, I love vegetables, especially greens. Over time, children, no matter how young, learn to eat foods they once disliked. As we get older, our taste buds change and so do our food likes and dislikes. Until then, just a few simple steps can make all the difference in your child’s diet, whether they know it or not.
